The Bhiwandi police booked an autorickshaw driver after he ran over his two-year-old daughter while reversing his vehicle. The police said the incident took place around 9 a.m. on Sunday in Hanuman Nagar in Bhiwandi when Sanjay Kumar Gupta, 26, was leaving for work.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, Zone II, Thane Police, said, “Gupta reversed his autorickshaw to get on to the main road and was unaware that his daughter, Pooja, who was playing outside the house, was in his path.”

Gupta applied the brakes when he heard his daughter scream, but by then the rear wheels of the vehicle had run over her head. When Gupta rushed to his daughter, she lay motionless, bleeding from the head.

Pooja was rushed to IGM Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission. The police recorded Gupta’s statement and that of other eye witnesses. An officer said Gupta admitted that he did not see his daughter in the rear view mirror as had crouched while playing. Mr. Patil said, “After inquiries, we registered a case of death due to negligence under the Indian Penal Code. Gupta has not been arrested as yet.”

Not yet arrested

An officer with the Bhiwandi police said as Gupta is in a disturbed state following the incident, a decision on whether to arrest him will be taken after Pooja’s last rites are completed.
