The APMC police arrested a fruit vendor on Tuesday night for the murder of another fruit vendor in the APMC market following a petty argument.

On Sunday night, the accused, Munna Khalil Khan (28), asked Umer Shaikh (27), a friend of his brother, about the latter’s whereabouts. Shaikh said he did not know where Khan’s brother was, and the duo started arguing. Khan punched Shaikh in the stomach a couple of times.

Shaikh, a resident of Kopri, began complaining of a stomach ache, and his brother took him to a doctor. “The doctor gave him medicines, but after going home, Shaikh vomited and fainted. His brother took him to NMMC Hospital, where he was declared dead on Monday,” Sub-inspector Sunil Tarmale said.

According to doctors, the punches to the stomach caused internal injuries and bleeding, ultimately leading to his death. A case of murder was registered with the APMC police, after which Khan was arrested on Tuesday. “After Shaikh’s death, the accused went on the run. We arrested him after we received a tip-off about his whereabouts. The fight was not intentional; it accidentally caused Shaikh’s death,” Mr. Tarmale said
