Local trains to soon travel at 110 kmph

The Railways has started work to increase the speed of trains in the suburban section to over 110 km per hour. At present, trains can run at a maximum of 80 to 100 km per hour depending on their make.

The work is part of a national plan to increase the average speed of trains on all sections. Rajesh Agarwal, member (rolling stock), Railway Board, said the suburban railways will be the first area of focus.

Senior railway officials said the higher speed can increase the number of services in a day by around 20%. “Improving the quality of trains and tracks is the first step, but it needs to be followed by upgrades to the signalling systems as well,” the official said.

At present, the Central Railway operates 1,774 services while the Western Railway runs 1,367 services every day. Once the speed on the suburban section is increased, work will start on intercity routes like Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nashik.
