Law students miffed at delay in printing re-evaluation results

Need marksheets to apply for All India Bar Examination

Undergraduate law students are upset over the inordinate delay in the release of marksheets sent for re-evaluation as it is preventing them from applying for the All India Bar Examination.

The third-year students, who had failed to clear the fifth semester exam held in January, had appeared for a re-exam, which was held in April. When the results were declared in July, several students sought re-evaluation. The results of the re-evaluation were published online on August 8, but the marksheets were not released.

The students have now cleared their sixth semester exam and the marksheets have been issued, but they are still awaiting the revised marksheets of the fifth semester exam. Both documents are essential for applying for the All India Bar Examination, which is held only once in six months. The registration portal for the exam closes on September 1.

Several students’ unions such as Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party, Chhatra Bharati, and Maharashtra Students Law Association (MASLA) have expressed concerns over the delay. The unions have claimed that over 200 undergraduate students have not yet received marksheets for subjects such as criminal procedure code, public international law, and civil procedure code.

Siddharth Ingle, founder president, MASLA, said, “Mumbai University is not in a position to take responsibility for the arbitrary functioning of its affiliated law colleges. Over 1,000 final-year students are desperately awaiting their re-evaluation results.” Mahesh Samant, general secretary of CYSS, said the students have been following up on the marksheets for almost a week. He said, “Hundreds of students have to go through the admission process or give entrance exams elsewhere. This is highly irresponsible of the university.”

D.R. Chaudhari, deputy registrar, Mumbai University, said the process of issuing marksheets has started. “The students are expected to get it next week,” he said. Dr. Vinod Patil, director of examination and re-evaluation, said, “The results have been declared; only the marksheets have not been issued. It will be done within a few days. The All India Bar Examination is not within the university’s purview.”

Rathod Ashutosh, spokesperson of the varsity’s examination section, said, “Marksheets have been issued to students. Those who have not received them may visit the Exam House at Kalina. Marksheets shall be issued on priority without any delay in view of the ensuing bar examination.”
