A resident of Kurla has alleged negligence by doctors at a local hospital after his 31-year-old wife died of excessive bleeding after delivering a girl, and the newborn succumbed to a lung complication. After receiving a written complaint, the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police have forwarded the details and the post-mortem reports to the medical negligence board of JJ Hospital.
In his complaint, Sunil Das has alleged that his wife was taken to the labour room of Habib Hospital around 8 a.m. on October 25, and the gynaecologist walked in 45 minutes later which could have worsened her condition.
The gynaecologist, Dr. Shifa Khan, however, denied any negligence. Speaking to The Hindu , Dr. Khan said the patient suffered from a postpartum haemorrhage. “During delivery, she developed convulsion which caused hypoxia in the baby. We could deliver the baby normally but the baby did not cry at birth. The mother was taken to the operation theatre and we conducted an obstetric hysterectomy (uterus removal) to control the bleeding but that did not help either.”
The mother died on October 28 and the baby succumbed the next day. Preliminary post-mortem observations by doctors at Rajawadi Hospital said the mother went into a haemorrhagic shock while the baby had developed bilateral lung consolidation. RTI activist Shakeel Shaikh has forwarded the complaint to the police commissioner and the municipal commissioner.
