Kisan Sabha protest march reaches Mulund

Around 15,000 farmers of the All Indian Kisan Sabha , who set out on a protest march from Nashik last week, reached Mulund on Saturday night.

The farmers intend to gherao the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday and voice their demands, which include a complete farm loan waiver, implementation of the recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan Commission, providing forest rights and better compensation for land acquired by the government.

Akhilesh Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII), said, “The farmers are being accommodated at the now defunct octroi plaza in Mulund (East). They have made their own arrangements for food. We are collaborating with different organisations to provide them with water and medical facilities.”

Mr. Singh said adequate personnel have been deployed along the Eastern Express Highway, which the protesters will be using on Sunday morning to march to Sion. The farmers will camp at Somaiya Ground on Sunday night and march to the Vidhan Bhavan on Monday.

Deepak Deoraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Mumbai Police spokesperson, said, “Several companies of the State Reserve Police Force and Riot Control Police have been asked to be on standby.”

The march is likely to affect traffic in the southern parts of the city. The Eastern Express Highway from Mulund toll plaza to Somaiya Ground will be closed from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Saurabh Tripathi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ & East), Mumbai Traffic Police said, “A lane on the south-bound carriageway will be reserved for light vehicles. Vehicles taking the route adjacent to the procession will have to restrict their speed to 20 kmph.”

Heavy vehicles heading towards Mumbai on Eastern Express Highway will be diverted via alternatives routes like Kalwa, Vitava, Airoli and the Vashi Creek Bridge. Vehicles travelling from Mumbai towards Thane will be diverted to Sion Panvel Highway, Vashi Creek Bridge, Airoli and Vitava.
