We want action: Friends, relatives of Ramesh Shinde gather outside Kharghar fire station on Tuesday.

A sub-officer at Kharghar fire station committed suicide on Monday at the quarters adjoining the fire station. His relatives and colleagues have blamed his higher officers for the death.

Ramesh Shinde (56) was found by his family around 7 p.m. and taken to a private hospital in Kharghar. Due to non-availability of ICU, he was taken to MGM Hospital in Vashi where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to the Kharghar police, his wife and son were in the hall while Shinde was in the bedroom when he took the extreme step. “He had been on leave for three days since he was stressed out. He recently had a bypass surgery and was not in a position to handle too much stress. Yet the higher officials used to make him meet targets in a shorter period. He had hinted that he would end his life if the pressure continued,” one of his colleagues at Kharghar fire station said.

On Tuesday, when the body of Shinde was brought to Kharghar for last rites, colleagues, family members, and friends gathered at the fire station demanding action against his higher officials. CIDCO joint MD Prashant Narnaware, and CIDCO employees’ union leaders Nilesh Tandem and J.T. Patil convinced the crowd that action would be taken following which the crowd dispersed and the last rites were performed.

“We are recording statement of his relatives and colleagues. No case has been registered yet,” police inspector Mahesh Patil from Kharghar police station said.

Shinde who had been in service for the last 35 years was due for retirement in two years. He is survived by wife and two sons of which one works with the fire department in the Thane Municipal Corporation and the other in a private firm.
