The Oshiwara police on Monday arrested the 34-year old woman who had accused actor Karan Oberoi of rape, for allegedly orchestrating an attack on herself earlier this year.

Mr. Oberoi was arrested on May 6 this year after the woman, an astrologer by profession, registered a complaint against him with the Oshiwara police. On May 25, she registered a separate complaint alleging that she had been assaulted and threatened by unidentified bikers while on a morning walk. However, upon investigation, the police found the attack to be staged and arrested her lawyer Kashif Ali in this connection.

Police sources said Mr. Ali, during interrogation, said the woman too was part of the plan to stage the attack, and added that she had been under the police scanner since then.

Senior inspector Shailesh Pasalwad confirmed the arrest but refused to reveal any further details.

A source close to the investigation said, “We took several days to verify the claims made by the lawyer and then arrested the woman on Monday. She has been charged with giving false information with respect to an offence under the Indian Penal Code. However, she is only charged in connection with the supposed attack on her, and the investigation into her rape complaint is still on.”

The woman, in her complaint on May 25, had alleged that two men on a bike drew up to her while she was taking a morning walk near Joggers’ Park in Andheri and assaulted her with a dagger, and threw a piece of paper at her with ‘TAKE THE CASE BACK’ written on it.

The police arrested four accused, who included Mr. Ali.

Mr. Oberoi, after spending around a month in judicial custody, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on June 7 this year.
