Hospital does not have prisoner ward: lawyer

A day after his lawyer lashed out at prison authorities for disobeying court orders, extortion accused Iqbal Kaskar was on Saturday taken to St. George Hospital for a medical check-up. Mr. Kaskar’s lawyer Vishal Ingavle has alleged that his client was being mistreated in Thane Central Jail, where he has been lodged since his arrest in January last year.

Mr. Ingavle said that Mr. Kaskar left the prison around 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, under tight police security, and was taken to St. George for a check-up.

“The court order specifically states that my client be admitted. However, the prison authorities purposely took him to St. George, knowing fully well that the hospital does not have a prisoner ward and hence he can not be admitted there,” Mr. Ingavle alleged.

He added that Mr. Kaskar underwent X-rays for both his hands and legs, which are swollen and make movement difficult. He was taken back to the prison after two hours. On Friday, Mr. Kaskar was taken to the Thane Civil Hospital for a check up and taken back to the prison. Mr. Ingavle had claimed that this was in direct contravention of the court orders, which had asked the authorities to take him to either St. George or JJ Hospital.

“We are waiting for Monday so that we can bring all these things to the court's attention. The prison authorities are making a mockery of the court,” Mr. Ingavle said.

Nitin Waychal, Superintendent of Police at the jail, refused to comment on the matter, saying that he was on leave.
