Over 1,000 delegates from 40 countries will converge on the city on January 12 and 13 to attend the 25th edition of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII’s) Partnership Summit, which the State will be hosting for the first time.

The CII annual flagship event will be based on the theme, New India: Rising to Global Occasions, and is being organised in association with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the State government.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu will be the chief guest and deliver the inaugural address. Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu will chair the summit and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would be among the guests of honour.

Mr. Prabhu said, “India has recorded the highest FDI this year, a figure higher than that of China. Invest India has been given a target to attract $100 billion of FDI in the next two years. Countries, sectors and specific companies are being targeted for this purpose. Companies which have investible surplus and inclination to invest in India are being targeted for bringing in FDI.”

He said, “The idea is that the $100 billion investment should go to those States which can absorb the investment and Maharashtra has the highest potential to get such an investment.”

Noting India’s improvement in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings, Mr. Prabhu said the government is coming out with a mapping of ease of doing business for each district in the country. He said Maharashtra would be one of the top destinations where district-level rankings would be improved. “This initiative will go a long way in boosting investment,” he added.

The summit will witness the participation of business delegations from countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.K., Russia, South Africa, Bolivia, Nepal, Belarus, Ukraine, and Maldives.

Mr. Prabhu said, “At a time of global slowdown, India remains a bright spot in the world economy. The summit will showcase to the global and domestic industry the initiatives being taken by the government to accelerate growth. The summit will serve as a trigger to boost the growth of the Indian economy.”

The Minister ruled out any bailout package for the ailing private carrier Jet Airways, citing that the sector is deregulated and the company’s management should take care of the airline in a professional manner.
