The Hill Line police on Monday arrested the husband and father-in-law of a 20-year-old woman, who was found dead in Ulhasnagar last month.
The police said that the victim, Kamaljeet Kaur Labana, a native of Delhi, married Bobby Singh six months ago and moved to his house in Ulhasnagar. The police said Kamaljeet’s death came to light on July 23, when her brother visited the Ulhasnagar house and Ranjit Singh (58), the father-in-law, told him that his sister had committed suicide in her bedroom that day.
The brother suspected foul play and informed his parents and the Hill Line police about Kamaljeet’s death. Senior Police Inspector G.H. Palange said Kamaljeet’s parents filed a complaint against the in-laws last week and an Accidental Death Report was registered.
Mr. Palange said, “Kamaljeet’s parents said the in-laws demanded expensive clothing as dowry for the wedding. They suspect she was killed for refusing to accept their demands for more gifts and jewellery.”
The police said that Ranjit Singh was the only person present in the house when Kamaljeet died, and he violated the law by taking the body to the hospital without informing them. An officer said, “We are awaiting the post-mortem report to find out if there are signs of struggle on the body.”
Bobby Singh and Ranjit Singh have been charged with murder and dowry harassment under the Indian Penal Code. The police have also booked Bobby Singh’s mother, two brothers and their wives in the case.
