Motorists in the city need to be more vigilant from Sunday as to where they plan to park as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to crack the whip on unauthorised parking. The BMC plans to fine motorists ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 if their vehicles are found in no parking zones.

In the first phase of its new parking policy, the BMC has earmarked no parking zones within a 500-metre radius of 23 parking locations in the city. BMC officials said that they are in process of starting three additional parking lots and the no parking zone will extend to areas adjoining them as soon as they start. In the second phase, officials said that the BMC will be declaring certain roads as no parking zones, where the fines will be applicable.

The 23 locations where the penalty will be in force are Worli, Malabar Hill, Bandra near Elco Market, Tunga Village on Saki Vihar Road, Chandivali, Goregaon, Lower Parel, Kalina, Nahur, Sewri, Mulund, Kanjurmarg, Napean Sea Road, and Vikhroli. The three additional parking lots will be soon be set up at Oshiwara, Eksar in Borivali and Sewri.

BMC officials said that they will be supported by the traffic police to ensure that there is no unauthorised parking in these areas. The penalty starts with ₹5,000 for two-wheelers and increases progressively to ₹8,000 for three-wheelers, ₹10,000 for light four-wheelers, ₹11,000 for medium four-wheelers such as tempos, and ₹15,000 for heavy vehicles.

The fine is divided into two components: towing charges and the penalty amount. Once the vehicle is towed away, the BMC will impose a daily fine on it till 30 days, after which the vehicle will be auctioned.
