The Goods and Services Tax (GST) will bolster India’s economy and help it compete with top countries in the world, BJP national president Amit Shah, who is on a two-day visit to Goa, said here on Saturday. He said efforts to malign the new tax regime have come to naught.
Mr. Shah was addressing over 2,500 party workers after arriving at Dabolim airport in South Goa at around 11.30 a.m. Mr. Shah said there might be some teething problems with the implementation of the GST, but they could be worked out.
He said, “Tax reforms through GST might appear muted at the beginning, but it will soon propel the Indian economy to among the best in the world. Friday midnight saw the implementation of the biggest tax reform since Independence. India and its 125 crore people are now ready to compete with the world.”
Mr. Shah added, “Whether it is Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat or Assam, there will be a common tax structure and with no impediments. By eliminating multiple taxes, the Modi government has given businessmen and entrepreneurs relief from the Inspector Raj.”
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, BJP Goa unit chief Vinay Tendulkar, party national joint general secretary Santoshji, Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik and South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar were among leaders present at the meet.
Mr. Shah is in the State to plan the strategy for the the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It will also interact with the party’s elected representatives to strengthen the BJP’s organisational structure in the State. Mr. Shah will inaugurate the party’s South Goa office in Margao on Sunday. He will also be meeting professionals such as industrialists, hotel owners, chartered accountants, doctors, and builders.
