Veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare, who was grievously injured when two unidentified assailants fired at him near his Kolhapur home earlier this week, has passed away at the Breach Candy hospital, the hospital doctors confirmed late on Friday.

"I can confirm that he is no more. He passed away a few minutes ago," Dr Gita Koppikar, a spokesperson of the Breach Candy hospital told The Hindu shortly before midnight on Friday.

82-year-old Pansare, who was attacked when he was returning from a daily morning walk with his wife Uma, 67, was airlifted from Kolhapur and admitted to the South Mumbai hospital on Fridsay evening after he reportedly developed a swelling in his lungs.

After admission, the Breach Candy doctors said he was put on ventilator, and his condition was described as "critical but stable".

Pansare (82) and his wife had been shot from a close range near their residence “Ideal Housing Society” at around 8.30 am on Monday when the couple was returning from a morning walk from the Shivaji University campus at Kolhapur. While Pansare sustained bullet wounds on the nape of his neck and another minor injury on his hand, wife Uma suffered a bullet injury on her neck.

Reacting to Pansare's demise, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde said "An extremely sad end to the day. The government must fins the culprits and bring them to justice as soon as possible. May his soul rest in peace."

The state police have so far made no headway in the investigations, and claim to have drawn sketches of some suspects based on CCTV footage. The attack has several similarities with the killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune last August.
