Mumbai: Investigation into the murder of a 22-year-old woman has revealed that she was killed by her husband on April 8, the day they arrived in Mumbai after getting married in Uttar Pradesh on April 6. The police found the body of Sabreen Siddiqui on April 10 amid bushes behind the Gorai bus stop. The MHB Colony police arrested the husband, Asif (25), from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
Police Inspector Sudhakar Kamble, MHB Colony police station, said, “After arriving in Mumbai, Asif took Sabreen to the Haji Malang shrine in the afternoon. That night, he took her to a deserted spot in Gorai, strangled her using her stole and dumped the body behind the Gorai bus stop.” Mr. Kamble said, “ We are verifying Asif’s claims that he did not want to marry Sabreen, but was pressured by her family which holds a lot of influence in his native place.” He added, “Asif stayed at a friend’s house in Lucknow after he fled Mumbai. The friend was unaware that Asif was on the run after killing Sabreen.”
Asif was brought to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday morning and produced in court. He has been remanded in police custody till May 9. The police are interrogating him to find out the motive for the murder. The Kandivali police said that Sabreen’s brother, a resident of Kandivali, approached them when he was unable to get in touch with Sabreen after April 8. He was instrumental in identifying Sabreen’s body and helping the police trace Asif.
