Girl in love with lower caste boy moves HC seeking 24x7 security

Says parents, uncle have been torturing her over relationship

An 18-year-old Maratha girl moved the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking protection from her parents and uncle who, she says, have threatened to kill her if she continues her affair with a boy from a lower caste.

Not of marriageable age

Priyanka Shete, a law student, said she has decided to marry Viraj Awghade (19), a member of the Matang caste (recognised as a Scheduled Caste), when he attains the legal age for marriage.

Ms. Shete alleged that her parents started torturing her when they learnt about their relationship. She has requested the court to provide her and Mr. Awghade with 24x7 security. She has also sought action against her parents and uncle.

Advocate Nitin Satpute, who filed her petition, said Ms. Shete had attempted to end her life when she could no longer bear the torture. She was hospitalised on February 26 last year and discharged on May 2. She later filed a complaint at the Talegaon police station.

The plea mentions an incident where Ms. Shete’s uncle, advocate Dattaray Shete, held a katta (handmade pistol) to her head when he came to know about the affair. He threatened to kill her if she did not end her relationship with Mr. Awghade. The plea also mentions that Ms. Shete’s parents prevented her from continuing her studies and forcibly took her to Tamil Nadu.

The matter will be heard by a Division Bench of Justice Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre on May 3.
