“We are investigating that angle as we have not been able to get any leads. We have alerted all police stations in Thane to keep an eye on any unidentified body. The prime suspect in the murder case is the woman’s son, Shekhar, and there are possibilities that he might feel guilty of what he did,” police inspector Giridhar Gore from Rabale police station said.

Chandrakala Yasnwante Bhaiyye (63) was found dead at her residence in Sidhivinayak society at Sector 9, Ghansoli. While Bhaiyye stayed on the third floor of the building along with her husband, Shekhar, who worked as an instrumentation designer in Vikhroli, stayed on the fifth floor of the same building along with his wife and son.

The incident is suspected to have occurred between 7 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. as Shekhar left home around 7 a.m. on the pretext of buying milk and was seen leaving the society around 7.30 a.m.. The victim’s husband is a trader at the vegetable market in APMC. He went to work in the early morning, and when he returned by around 10.45 a.m., he found his wife dead in the hall of the one-room kitchen flat. She had three stab marks on the neck.

Around 8 a.m., when Shekhar did not not reach home, his wife tried calling him and found the phone switched off. Then she called her mother-in-law to check if he had gone there, but she did not answer the call.

“In CCTV footage, we found that her son was leaving the society around 7.30 a.m., and then was seen going towards Ghansoli railway station. He was traced till Thane railway station. The family has not told us anything about any issues between the son and the mother. After the incident, the family had gone to their home town for the final rites, and once they come back, we will get details,” Mr. Gore said.
