The Veer Savarkar flyover in Goregaon and the Gen A K Vaidya swimming pool in Chembur will be thrown open to the public without an inauguration, which has been postponed due to the death of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday.

The inauguration of both projects was scheduled this week, but Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has ordered that they be started anyway.

“People should get to use facilities that are ready, without waiting for an inauguration. I have directed the administration to throw them open,” Mr. Mahadeshwar said on Thursday.

Important link

The 500-m Veer Savarkar flyover is an important East-West connector. It bypasses the busy MTNL junction on SV Road to directly connect to New Link Road, and has three lanes on either side.

Work on the flyover began in 2015 and was completed on July 31 at a cost of ₹27 crore. Shiv Sena youth wing leader Aaditya Thackeray was to have inaugurated it on Friday.

Pool gets upgrade

Similarly, the inauguration of the Vaidya swimming pool in Chembur was scheduled for Saturday.

This is an Olympic-standard pool that was reconstructed and repaired, besides being upgraded to include a diving pool, children’s pool, viewing gallery, and parking area. Work on the pool was completed on June 30 at a cost of ₹18 crore.

The decision to postpone the inauguration was taken following the seven-day nationwide mourning period declared due to the death of the former prime minister.
