Five of gang wanted in 22 cases held in Mahad

Raigad Local Crime Branch has nabbed five members of a gang who ran a merry-go-round at village fairs and weekly markets, and burgled houses and stole vehicles at night.

The accused, who were arrested from Mahad, are wanted in 22 cases registered across Raigad and Ratnagiri districts. They have been identified as Haider Azis Pathan (22), Raheem Ismail Shaikh (32), Hussain Mukhtyar Dhangu (18), Saleem Mohammad Shaikh (25), and Shabeer Mohammad Shaikh (20), who hail from Mahad and Mangaon. A 16-year-old boy, who was involved with the gang in two thefts, is yet to be detained.

Senior Police Inspector Jamil Shaikh “While the gang ran the merry-go-round, one of them would do a recce of houses in the area. At night, they would break into houses whose owners were away, while one of them stood guard outside.” The accused operated in Mahad city, Mahad taluka, Mahad MIDC, Mangaon, Pen, Goregaon, Roha in Raigad, and Khed in Ratnagiri. The police have recovered nine vehicles, four mobiles and gold jewellery worth ₹12.89 lakh. The accused have been remanded in police custody till July 17.

Mr. Shaikh said, “We are investigating if their wives were also involved. To commit the crimes, the accused used the stolen bikes till they ran out of petrol.”
