Fire in Bandra chawl injures three

Another fire broke out at Bandra’s Shastri Nagar Chawl on Tuesday morning, injuring three. The injured are reportedly stable. This is the second such incident this month. The fire, caused by a suspected short circuit, broke out around 10.30 a.m.Onlookers heard a cylinder blast but police did not confirm this. Around 10 to 15 shanties were gutted. Four fire engines and water tankers were sent to the spot for what for what the Fire Brigade described as a level II (minor) fire. Among the injured were Akbar Shaikh (50), who sustained burns on his face and Asif Mansuri (35), who sustained a fracture as he fell from a height.

According to Dr. Vasant Sonarikar, Chief Medical Officer at the K.B. Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, a fireman suffered burns on his thigh but was treated on the spot. The fire was brought under control after about an hour.

Senior police inspector Girish Anavkar of Bandra police station said, “Prima facie it appears to be a case of short circuit. The fire brigade will investigate its cause.”

On October 30, a major fire had broken out in Bandra's Nargis Dutt Nagar slum that gutted nearly 80 shanties.
