A fire broke out in a building in NRI Estate, Phase II, at Seawoods on Wednesday evening, completely damaging one flat.

No injuries were reported in the incident, officers said.

The fire originated from the air-conditioner in the bedroom of flat no. 502 in tower 56. The owner, Jayashree Manani, was in the living room. She noticed the fire in the bedroom around 7 p.m., and alerted the neighbours. While some of the residents ran to the terrace, some stayed back in their flats. The family of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone II, Ashok Dudhe, was stuck in flat no. 704, and were later rescued by fire officers.

“Many residents stayed indoors and after the fire was brought under control, we evacuated them from the flats,” fire officer Amrutanand Borade from Nerul said. Around four fire tenders and a 68-metre-long Bronto skylift were used to douse the blaze. “The 2-BHK flat was charred completely,” Mr. Borade said.

In October 2015, a fire had broken out in another tower in the same society. According to fire officers, at that time, the society did not have fire fighting equipment. Now, it has a firefighting system, but it was not working, officers said.
