A major fire gutted a large portion of the ceremonial lounge of Mumbai Airport on Saturday afternoon.
The fire control room said that they received a call at 1:46 p.m. By 2:41 p.m. the fire was declared as Level III as it had spread through the ground plus one structure.
Chief Fire Officer, Prabhat Rahangdale, who was at the spot informed that the fire was confined to electric wiring, electric installation, wooden furniture, wooden partition, sofa sets, decorative materials, the false ceiling etc in an area about 5000 sq. feet.
The fire officials used 6 lines of 9 fire engines to bring the fire under control. The Mumbai International Airport Ltd also deployed their fire tenders to the location.
An airport spokesperson said that the lounge was used by VVIPs and was not a part of the passenger terminal. She clarified that the fire had not hampered other airport operations in any way.
