Six people sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out inside the gymnasium of a club house in Goregaon on Thursday. The injured are undergoing treatment at the National Burns Centre in Airoli.

According to the Aarey police, the fire was detected around 10.30 a.m., when a group of trainers and members noticed smoke emitting from the steam and sound bath chamber of the gymnasium in the Royal Palm Emerald Club.

“They opened the door of the chamber to check on the smoke and the fire blazed out at them, injuring one of them critically. The internal circuit wiring is said to have been faulty. We will decide on registering a complaint after our inquiries,” Vidhyalaxmi Hiremath, senior police inspector, Aarey police station, said.

While two fire engines and one jumbo tanker from Dindoshi fire station were rushed to the spot, officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade said locals were attempting to douse the flames with the help of fire extinguishers when they reached the spot.

“We brought the fire under control within 45 minutes. The fire was confined to electrical wiring, installations and the bath chamber. Some furniture has also been damaged,” an official from the fire brigade said.

Fire brigade officials said the six people who sustained injuries were pulled out before their arrival and rushed to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri, from where they were shifted to the National Burns Centre in Airoli.

According to officials, Ankit Mondalkar (29) is in critical condition, having sustained 80% burns. Police officials said he may have been the one to open the door of the bath chamber.

While Jitendra Tiwari (33) and Dinesh Singh (43) have sustained 20% burns, Sandeep Shetty (39) and Rahul Singh (39) have sustained 12% burns, and Manoj Pant (21) has suffered 10% burns.
