Excise official arrested for robbing train passenger

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Vashi has arrested an employee of the Excise department for allegedly robbing a co-passenger of ₹10,000 in a local train. The accused, Akshay Prakash Khot (25), who worked as a tax assistant in the office of the Assistant Commissioner of GST, was arrested on Wednesday night in Kalyan.

The complainant, Satish Kothavale, a resident of Chunabhatti, has alleged that on June 17, while he was travelling on a Panvel-bound train from Chunabhatti at 8.30 p.m., a man stamped on his foot. “Mr. Kothavale claimed that the accused stamped on his foot twice after which they had a verbal duel. Mr. Khot snatched ₹10,000 from the complainant’s pocket and jumped out of the moving train onto platform no. 1 at Mankhurd,” police inspector Santosh Dhanawate, public relations officer, GRP, said.

Mr. Kothavale approached the GRP. With the help of CCTV footage, a team led by police inspector Nandakishore Saste from the GRP traced him to Kalyan and arrested him. It was found that Mr. Khot was a sportsperson and an employee of the Central government. “While the complainant has alleged that the money was stolen, the accused claimed he had not, and he ran away because of the fight. What his intentions were and what actually happened are being investigated,” deputy commissioner of police Ravindra Sengaonkar said.

He was arrested under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC, and has been remanded in police custody till Saturday.
