Shammi Kapoor was made for song-n-dance in Hindi films. There is this popular story about how he made Pancham nervous while selecting a music director for Teesri Manzil. Kapoor hummed the Nepali folk song on which Pancham had based the tune of the trial song ‘ Deewana mujh sa nahi’ . ‘ Neela Aasmaan So Gaya’ from Silsila was composed by Shiv-Hari and rendered by Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar in two different versions. In the mid 70s, during the outdoor shooting of Zameer , Bachchan got a chance to spend a lot of time with Kapoor. The stars used to meet regularly after the shooting and play music and sing together. During one such jamming session at Pune, Kapoor hummed a folk tune, which Bachchan liked immensely. Seven-eight years later when Yash Chopra was working on Silsila with Bachchan, he remembered the tune and took Kapoor’s permission to use it.

Shammi Kapoor began his career as an actor with a string of flops. It was Tumsa Nahin Dekha’s success in 1957 that turned the tide in his favour.

It actually was a lucky break, as Tumsa Nahin Dekha had started with Anand in the lead under the direction of Subodh Mukherjee. For some reason, first Mukherjee left the film and Nasir Hussain replaced him as the director. Hussain signed Ameeta to play the heroine opposite Dev Anand, who left the film as he didn’t want a newcomer. The rest is history.

Dev Anand continued to be a lucky charm for Kapoor, as two more films, Junglee and Teesri Manzil , initially had him as the lead, and when he dropped out, Kapoor was signed.

All three films were blockbusters and remembered as significant milestones in Kapoor’s career.

Shammi Kapoor was trained in classical and light music under the renowned Pandit Jagannath Prasad. SD Burman gave him a break as singer in Jeevan Jyoti (1953), where we can hear Kapoor singing a small part in ‘ Tasveeren banti hain’ along with Asha Bhosle.

Shammi Kapoor played many interesting characters at the start of his career. One of them was a rare negative role in Talwar Productions’ Mem Sahib (1955), with Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari in the lead roles and Shammi as the scheming lover.

Kishore Kumar as playback singer was never considered the voice for Shammi Kapoor the actor; Mohammad Rafi was Shammi Kapoor’s favourite. Kishore sang a few songs for Kapoor only in the 80s, in Armaan and Wanted .

Shammi Kapoor directed two films, Manoranjan in 1974 and Bundal Baaz in 1976. Manoranjan starred Sanjeev Kumar and Zeenat Aman and was based on Billy Wilder’s Irma La Douce , which Kapoor had seen in the 60s. Initially he wanted to play the hero, a policeman, but by the time he could started work on the film, he felt he had gotten too old for the role.

After Manoranjan , Kapoor made Bundal Baaz with Rajesh Khanna in the lead. Kapoor actually wanted to sign Amitabh Bachchan but he was unavailable. Khanna plays a daydreamer in the comic-adventure. In an opening dream sequence Khanna appears as Phantom chasing a few goons. Kapoor also recreated Phantom’s den for the sequence. Unfortunately, the film turned out to be a disaster.

Kedar Kapoor directed Jabse Tumhe Dekha Hai starring Geeta Bali and Pradeep Kumar in the lead. Incidentally, it was the last film of Bali, Shammi Kapoor’s wife. The film had the brothers in a guest appearance in a fun qawwali “ Tumhe husn deke khuda ne sitamgar banaya ”.

Later, both of them were part of the cast in films Ahsaas (1979) and Ijaazat (1986) but had no scenes together.
