The Kharghar police on Friday arrested an engineer on charge of negligence in connection with the case of a Kharghar resident who died while driving on an ill-maintained road.
Ashwin Krishna Darpankar (29), a resident of Taloja and an engineer with J. M. Mhatre Infra Pvt. Ltd, was incharge of supervising the roads mainatined by the firm in Kharghar. Senior Police Inspector Dilip Kale said Shilpa Puri, 34, died on October 14 and CCTV footage revealed that her scooter skid on an uneven stretch of road near Utsav chowk and she was run over by a hydraulic crane.
Puri, a trainer with the VLCC’s Nerul branch was on her way home when the accident took place. On October 17, over 200 residents of Kharghar took part in a candlelight march to demand justice for Puri. All 12 corporators in Kharghar also met Senior Police Inspector Dilip Kale and demanded that action be taken against CIDCO, which is responsible for maintaining all roads in Kharghar.
Leena Garad, a corporator from Khargha, said, “J.M. Mhatre is just the sub-contractor. Action should be taken against the CIDCO officials. Every time we raise the issue, the CIDCO MD is never available to hold a meeting.”
