The Palghar police have arrested two accused who were found to be in possession of a massive cache of arms, ammunition and drugs in Manor on Sunday.

According to sources, the operation was jointly conducted by the Local Crime Branch, Palghar, and the Manor police, based on a tip-off received by assistant police inspector Pratap Darade with the LCB.

“Acting on the information, we laid a trap near Hindustan Dhaba at Mauje Chilhar junction in Manor and intercepted two people around 5.55 p.m. The duo were carrying large gunny sacks, which we seized and opened,” an officer with the Palghar police said.

The sacks contained three AK-47 assault rifles with magazines, four countrymade handguns and 63 rounds of live ammunition, along with 8.9 kilograms of ephedrine, 8.5 kg of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), 500 grams of brown sugar and 3 kg of Morphine, officers said.

The duo was arrested and the contraband, which was collectively worth around ₹13 crore, seized. They have been booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act.

“The accused were produced in court and have been remanded in our custody for 10 days. Preliminary information indicates that they intended to sell the contraband to someone, and inquiries are under way to trace its source,” assistant police inspector Siddhawa Jaybhaye, in-charge of Manor police station, said.
