A dog died and its owners were admitted to hospital after a fire broke out in a flat on the ground floor of Dilkhush building at Malabar Hill on Thursday.

The fire department received a call at 4:14 a.m. It took four fire engines and three water tankers to bring the fire under control by 6:11 a.m. and put it out by 6:50 a.m. Senior Police Inspector Bhaskarrao Sawant, Malabar Hill police station, said, “The dog must have panicked due to the smoke. Unable to breathe, he headed to the bathroom and was found asphyxiated there.” The dog’s owners, Dr. Keku Kavrana and Firoza Keku Kavrana, have been admitted to the ICU at Breach Candy Hospital.

The fire burnt wooden furniture and household articles, and engulfed an air-conditioning unit, a ceiling fan, and medicines in the 2,000 square foot flat. Six women were rescued from other floors of the building. Dr. Mahesh Koti, of the 108 ambulance that arrived at the site, declared the dog dead.
