A 31-year-old man and his mother have been booked under the Atrocities Act after a 31-year-old Dalit woman accused the man of raping her over six years on the promise of marrying her. The accused is yet to be arrested. Khandeshwar police have registered a case against Sandeep Pandharinath Dalvi and his mother under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955.

An officer said, “The victim alleged that Dalvi’s mother told her that her son had taken advantage of her and would never marry her because she was a Dalit.” Mr. Dalvi, a resident of Usarli village in Panvel, met the woman in 2012 and had sex with her after promising to marry her. ACP Prakash Nilewad, Panvel division, said, “When the victim’s family invited Mr. Dalvi and his mother to discuss marriage, they abused them over their caste.”
