Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar police are on the lookout for a BJP corporator who allegedly assaulted and tried to extort money from a hotelier.

Imtiaz Nisar Ahmed Shaikh (41) had recently started a hotel named Shahi Bawarchi in Sector 4, Belpada. A few days ago, when he was supervising the renovation work, he was approached by corporator Shatrughn Kakade.

As per the complaint, Mr. Kakade told Mr. Shaikh that if he ever faces problems in the area, he can contact him. Mr. Kakade also said if Mr. Shaikh wanted to do his business without trouble, he should pay ₹50,000 per month to him. After a few days, Mr. Kakade met Mr. Shaikh and asked him about his decision to which he said he would not pay the money as his business is legal and he has all the required permissions.

On Friday night, Mr. Kakade along with seven men went to the hotel and assaulted Mr. Shaikh and his staff. Mr. Kakade also threatened with dire consequences if he refused to pay him ₹50,000 on a monthly basis. Mr. Shaikh was taken to MGM Hospital, Kamothe.

“We registered a case on Monday after recording the statement of Mr. Shaikh at the hospital. Mr. Kakade is on the run,” Pradeep Tidar, senior police inspector, Kharghar police station, said.

Mr. Kakade and his men have been booked under Sections 385 (putting person in fear of injury to commit extortion), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
