A police constable was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molesting a four-year-old girl from his locality. According to the police, the incident occurred in Indira Nagar, Wadala, on the afternoon of June 16. The constable, Sanjay Waghmode (32), is posted with the local arms unit II of the Mumbai Police.
“Mr. Waghmode offered to give the victim chocolates and took her to his house, after which he molested her,” senior police inspector Gangadhar Sonawane, Wadala police station, said.
She managed to hold her silence for three days before confiding in her mother on Wednesday. Her parents immediately took her to the police station to file a complaint. “We registered a complaint against Mr. Waghmode, and he was arrested on Thursday morning,” Mr. Sonawane said.
Mr. Waghmode was charged with outraging a woman’s modesty under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. After being produced in court on Thursday, he was remanded in police custody till Monday, official said.
Meanwhile, the police have initiated their internal action. Deputy Commissioner of Police (LA-II) Manoj Patil said, “The constable was suspended with immediate effect and a department inquiry has been started against him.”
