The Bandra unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) on Saturday night seized the highest quantity of cocaine worth over ₹6 crore from two people in Mumbai.
The ANC got a tip-off that a drug deal was to take place on Saturday evening at Sizer Road in Amboli.
A trap was laid and a team led by police inspector Anil Wadhawane arrested the two accused. The duo have been identified as Daniel Ezieke (38) and John James Francis (35). Both are said to have arrived from Africa. A total of 1.005 kg of cocaine was seized from the them.
Shivdeep Lande, Deputy Commissioner of Police, ANC, said a probe is under way. “The two arrested accused are African nationals, who were here for peddling drugs. We are trying to understand how they procured the consignment and how they were functioning,” Mr. Lande said.
The duo have been charged under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for possessing, purchasing, and selling drugs, and abetment and criminal conspiracy.
They were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Fort on Sunday and remanded in police custody till January 17.
