In death, a 54-year-old woman gave a new lease of life to two critically ill people, making this the 33rd cadaver organ donation in Mumbai this year.

Ujawala Tiwari was rushed to Vile Parle’s Nanavati Hospital on August 27. According to doctors, she had suffered from a ‘posterior circulation’ stroke. Her relatives consented to donate her organs after her condition became irreversible during treatment.

“Despite maximum efforts to revive her including giving her clot-dissolving medication, her condition continued to deteriorate. She was eventually declared brain dead. The family was then counseled for organ donation,” explained Dr. Abdul Ansari, head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.

Doctors could retrieve one kidney and the liver and the organs were transplanted to two patients suffering from end-stage liver and kidney disease. The second kidney and heart could not be retrieved as they were not fit for transplant.
