Child trafficking racket: couple who purchased baby held

Took good care of the child but got him through illegal means, say police

The couple from Pune who purchased a seven-day-old boy for ₹3.2 lakh in December last year have been arrested by the Khandeshwar police.

The 48-year-old woman and her 53-year-old husband had been childless since their marriage, despite undergoing treatment, and hence started looking for other ways to get a baby.

“They have taken good care of the child and not exploited it, but, they got him through illegal means,” a police official said. The boy, now eight-months-old, was handed over to the Child Welfare Commission of Raigad district on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the police are still on the lookout for Abid Babu Sayyed (28) and Shabnam Bano Mohammed Shareef Khan (24), from Shivaji Nagar in Govandi, who sold the baby to the agent, Raju alias Dilshad Maksood Alam (35). Mr. Alam’s partner, Sujata Potdar (37), who is in custody of the Khandeshwar police, has not revealed much.

The police are looking to verify if the couple from Govandi are the baby’s parents or they stole him, or bought him from someone else.

Ms. Potdar and the couple from Pune will be produced before the court on Sunday for further remand. Meanwhile, the Khandeshwar police have also intiated a transfer of custody of Mr. Alam from the Mumbra police for further investigations.
