Mumbai: A young biker who was injured after being hit by a speeding car in Gamdevi on Monday morning received timely aid thanks to the city police’s extensive Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera network.
Police officials said the accident was witnessed by CCTV operator Jyoti Mugutlal at the control room at around 9:35 a.m. on Monday. An officer at the control room said, “A speeding car knocked a motorist off his bike. The car then sped away from the spot.”
Ms. Mugutlal immediately alerted her superiors at the control room. The information was relayed to Police Sub Inspector Ganesh Patil posted at Gamdevi police station. Mr. Patil passed on the information to the police station’s Mobile Unit Five, which rushed to the spot.
Senior Police Inspector Netaji Bhopale, Gamdevi police station, said, “Our personnel admitted the victim, identified as Deepak Dalvi (26), to Bhatia Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He was in a state of shock as he fell unconscious after being knocked off the bike.”
No complaint
Mr. Dalvi, a resident of Malabar Hill area, told the police that he did not wish to register a complaint. The Gamdevi police have registered an Incident Report in the matter. Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Rashmi Karandikar said, “The prompt action by our personnel, CCTV operators and police station staff, helped us provide timely medical aid to the victim.”
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had inaugurated the network of CCTVs across the city in October 2016. The CCTVs were installed with a view to increase monitoring of crime in the city and increase real-time vigilance.
The Hindu on April 29 had reported how the CCTV network had helped traffic police personnel take action against traffic rule violators. There have also been instances of police arresting chain snatchers within a few hours of the crime with the help of CCTV footage.
