Candidate in Govandi, booked for raping minor relative, absconding

Former independent corporator lured victim by promising scholarship in U.S.

A former corporator and candidate for the Assembly elections has gone on the run after being booked for allegedly forcing himself on his 14-year-old relative last month.

According to the Shivaji Nagar police, the accused served as an independent corporator from Govandi and is now contesting the polls independently. He is married to the victim’s aunt.

“The victim approached us on October 5 and said that the incident occurred on September 27, when she had gone to the accused’s residence in Shivaji Nagar,” senior police inspector Sudarshan Paithankar said.

Sources said the accused seems to have planned the crime beforehand, as he had invited the victim to his house a day in advance.

“On September 26, the victim had gone out with some of her family members as the accused took them out for lunch. During this time, he told her that he had found a scholarship programme in the United States of America, which he thought would be good for her. He then told her to come to his house the next day to fill out the requisite forms, and added that her father would also be present at the time, as he had already told him,” an officer from the Shivaji Nagar police station said.

The next day, the victim went to the accused’s residence to find him alone at home. He allegedly told her that he was very lonely as his wife, her aunt, would constantly fight with him, and went on to proposition her, saying he wanted to marry her. The victim rejected his advances and tried to leave, but the accused allegedly restrained her forcibly and sexually assaulted her.

“The victim returned home after the assault and did not tell anyone, as her mother suffers from a psychological condition and the victim did not want to upset her. She later told some other relatives, who were too afraid to act against the accused as he has been helping the family financially for several years and is also a political figure. Finally, she told her grandmother, who brought her to us on October 5,” the officer said.

The police booked the accused for rape under the IPC and sections of POCSO. “The accused is on the run and we have several teams trying to trace and apprehend him,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Vishwapal Bhujbal, Deonar division, said.
