Eicher launches truck to take on Tata 407

Eicher Trucks & Buses, a part of VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd (VECV), has entered the sub-5 tonne pickup truck category with the Eicher Pro 1049 — its smallest truck so far — to garner market share in this growing segment currently dominated by the Tata 407 pickup.

Priced below Rs 7 lakh for the BS III variant and below Rs 8 lakh for the BS IV variant, the Eicher Pro 1049 truck is intended for those who transport perishable goods like milk, fruits and vegetables, bottled water, poultry products, and courier companies for their last-mile connectivity.

Last year, this segment grew by 38 per cent and a total of 8,000 units were sold by all players including Tata Motors, Mahindra and SLM Isuzu, which have offerings in this segment.

Expected growth

“This segment is expected to grow 20 per cent this year, and of 10,000-12,000 units expected to be sold by the industry, we are aiming to sell 2,000 units by the end of this year. We are sure we will do much better,” said Shyam Maller, senior vice-president, Sales & Marketing, VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd, the 50:50 joint venture of Volvo and Eicher.

“This truck can carry more volume as well as weight. Though it is priced 5 per cent more than the competition, its fuel mileage is 3- 4 per cent more than the competition and the revenue will more than compensate the premium the customer would be paying,” he added. He said the truck comes with a 10-foot cargo body and payload of 4.9 tonnes.
