Mumbai: Residential properties owned by the Modis and Mehul Choksi wore a desolate look on Thursday. Nirav Modi lived with his wife Ami in the Samudra Mahal cooperative housing society in Worli. Watchmen said the couple stayed at the house for a few days at a time, and that the longest that they had stayed was for a week.
A watchman, who did not want to be identified, said the couple was nice to him, and that he was shocked to learn about them being booked for fraud. Nirav also owns three other houses, including a four-BHK at the Grosvenor House building in Peddar Road, where his brother Nishal stayed with his wife Ishitia.
“The last time we saw them was in the first week of January, when they stayed for two days and left with a lot of suitcases. They were talking about leaving the country as they left,” a security guard said.
Nirav also owns a house near Opera House. Security guards at the building said he had bought the house as an investment.
Mr. Choksi owns a triplex flat in Walkeshwar, which is being renovated. Workers at the building said they had never seen Mr. Choksi, while watchmen said he had visited the house twice in 2013.
