BMC rejects ‘tainted’ firms, re-invites bids

Waste clearance contract worth ₹180 cr.

Bids will be re-invited for a ₹180-crore waste management contract to collect garbage in Bandra, after responses to the initial tender were found to be from scam-tainted firms, except for one.

As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) norms don’t allow for a single bidder, the process was scrapped, civic officials said.

Among the bidders were M/s Global Waste Management Cell, which has been blacklisted for its links to two companies allegedly involved in the de-silting scam. The company has moved court against the BMC decision. Besides Global, a joint venture of blacklisted companies D-Con and Do-it had bid as well. The seven-year contract is for collecting and transporting waste.

Vijay Singhal, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC, said, “As decided, we didn’t allow tainted companies to bid. This left us with a single bidder. Since we usually don’t allow single bidders to participate, we have re-invited tenders for this area.”

He said new bids can be submitted till May 30.

Though bids have been invited, solid waste management contracts worth nearly ₹500 crore are yet to be awarded for many areas, including Dadar, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Andheri.
