Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital in Parel now has a dedicated paediatric palliative care facility that will cater to terminally ill children by offering symptomatic treatment, pain management, and emotional support to the patients as well as their families. While 10 beds have been set aside in the hospital, the facility will mainly function by taking palliative care to the patients’ doorstep.

A team of 15 doctors, nurses and other staff specially trained in palliative services will be at the helm of this facility. Started on May 1, the facility is offering necessary care to 40 paediatric patients at present.

“Our team has been trained to be sensitive and only the most passionate nurturers are a part of the team,” said Dr. Minnie Bodhanwala, chief executive officer of the hospital.

Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life of patients with serious illnesses like cancer, HIV/AIDS, chronic tuberculosis, chronic organ failure, and congenital diseases. During the course of the treatment, the medical professionals inhibit or treat the symptoms of the disease while providing emotional support to the families. They also spend time counselling the children and their parents in coping with the practical problems the illness brings. In cases, where cure is no longer possible, improving the quality of life becomes the main focus in caring for the child and family.

“Children undergoing treatment for serious illnesses feel the most comfortable in an environment that they are familiar with. These can also be trying times for their parents, the counsellors and social workers on site ensure that the treatment of the patient goes smoothly”, said Dr. Bodhanwala. For example, the palliative team also takes chemotherapy to the patients’ doorstep at times so that they can get prioritised treatment. The facility has been started in association with the Cipla foundation.
