Bhima Koregaon case: bail plea of 3 activists rejected

Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj and Vernon Gonsalves have been charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and are in Yerawada jail since August 2018

The Bombay High Court on October 15 rejected the bail petition of activists Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj and Vernon Gonsalves charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for being involved in the Bhima Koregaon violence.

A single Bench of Justice S.V. Kotwal heard the pleas for over two months and reserved it last week.

The trio was arrested on August 28, 2018 and lodged at Yerawada jail since then.

In April 2018, the Pune police had conducted raids and carried out seizures across India. After two months, they arrested, Dalit activist and writer Sudhir Dhawale, Mahesh Raut, a Tata Institute of Social Science alumnus known for working for tribals in Gadchiroli, professor Shoma Sen, a retired professor of  Nagpur University and activist Rona Wilson who are all in judicial custody.

In August 2018, police arrested Varavara Rao, Mr. Gonsalves, Mr. Ferreira, Ms. Bharadwaj and Gautam Navalakha.
