Navi Mumbai: The APMC police arrested an autorickshaw driver early on Thursday for rash driving and causing death of a six-year-old girl in Turbhe on Wednesday night.

The accused, Babu Janu Zore (29), rammed into Anvita Rahul Patil, a Turbhe village resident, who was on her way home along with her mother after shopping. She was rushed to MGM Hospital in Vashi where she was declared brought dead.

“She had received a severe blow on her chest in the accident, which caused her death,” senior police inspector Satish Nikam from APMC police station said.

The girl and her mother Mayuri were walking when the speeding auto hit her near Maruti temple in Turbhe. She was thrown onto the road.

The auto driver was manhandled by the public and his vehicle too was damaged. Mr. Zore was later taken to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Hospital in Vashi.

“The auto driver had received minor injuries. After he received treatment at the NMMC Hospital, he was arrested and brought to the police station,” Mr. Nikam said.

The APMC police have also booked four unidentified men under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC for assaulting the auto driver. “Investigations are on to nab the people who assaulted Mr. Zore,” Mr. Nikam said.

The auto driver was arrested under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC, and Section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
