Accused says body was chopped, dumped in Vasai creek

An accused in the missing case of Assistant Police Inspector Ashwini Bidre has revealed that main accused Police Inspector Abhay Kurundkar allegedly murdered Bidre in his flat in Bhayander, chopped the body and dumped the severed head and limbs in Vasai creek on April 11, 2016.

Mahesh Manohar Falnikar (48), childhood friend of Mr. Kurundkar and fourth accused in the case, told the police that the next day he helped Mr. Kurundkar dump Bidre’s torso, which was preserved overnight in the fridge, in Vasai creek.

Mr. Falnikar said that Kundan Namdev Bhandari (51), Mr. Kurundkar’s driver and third accused in the case, helped Mr. Kurundkar clean the house and give it a fresh coat of paint to destroy evidence. Mr. Bhandari and Mr. Falnikar were presented in Panvel court on Friday and remanded in police custody till March 5 and March 9 respectively.

Nilesh Raut, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, said, “We are yet to recover the murder weapon and the cutter used to sever the body. We will launch an operation to retrieve the body parts from the creek on Monday.” Assistant Commissioner of Police Sangeeta Alphanso said, “We have sought the civic body’s permission to conduct the search operation and cordoned off the creek. The Navy will be providing boats, divers and underwater cameras for the search.”

Bidre, a resident of Roadpali in Kalamboli, was posted with the Protection of Civil Rights Unit at Konkan Bhavan. She went missing on April 11, 2016 and a missing case was registered on July 14, 2016. A case of kidnapping was registered with Kalamboli police on January 31, 2017. Mr. Kurundkar, who was posted at Security Branch, Thane Rural Police, allegedly had an extra-marital affair with Bidre.
