The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wants to put 28 amphitheatres in city gardens to good use by allowing performances, exhibitions and artwork there.

The decision was taken at the Mumbai Arts, Music and Culture Commission (MAMCC) meeting.

The newly formed MAMCC has identified many city gardens with such amphitheatres, which is rarely used for any public performances. In order to encourage art, music and dance, the BMC plans to make these available for performances or practice for a fee. It plans to use amphitheaters at 28 city parks to promote varied cultural events in the city. These include amphitheaters at Kamala Nehru Park, Cooperage garden and Tata Garden (Bhulabai Desai Road). Together, they can seat up to 4,260 people.

The commission was formed to provide inputs to the civic body for improvement in the design and aesthetics of urban spaces. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had asked all assistant commissioners to identify places in their wards for such performances. The MAMCC has now asked the civic body to take up these spaces for regular upkeep. A policy will be drafted to govern their use.

A civic official said, “We are looking at how these spaces can be improved to promote any kind of art, music and culture events.”

Interested people will have to apply for permission with the BMC’s gardens department for a fee.
