Mumbai: A 23-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly killing her 21-day-old daughter because she did not want a second girl child. According to the Powai police, the woman has been identified as Meena Jaiswal, a resident of Shiv Shakti Nagar on Saki Vihar Road, Powai.
“The baby was taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar by her parents early on February 8, where she was declared dead. When the post-mortem examination indicated an unnatural death, hospital authorities informed us,” said Senior PI B.K. Mahadeshwar, Powai police station.
The police questioned Meena, who was alone at home with the child before going to the hospital, and found her responses to be evasive. Doctors at Rajawadi Hospital sent a detailed post mortem report, which indicated the child had suffered head injuries and had been smothered. After two days of interrogation, Meena allegedly broke down and confessed to killing her daughter.
“Meena already had a daughter and wanted a son. When her second daughter was born, she was depressed and finally killed the baby,” Mr. Mahadeshwar said.
Meena, in her confession, has allegedly told the police that she first choked her daughter and then hit her head on the floor while her husband was at work. She then took the infant to hospital and tried to pass it off as an accident. She was placed under arrest and charged with murder under the IPC. She will be produced in court on Saturday.
