SC examines KEM report in late-stage abortion case

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Friday examined the report submitted by the KEM Hospital panel after examining a 22-year-old woman from Mumbai, who has approached the apex court seeking to terminate her pregnancy in its 23rd week on grounds of foetal anomaly. The court, however, deferred the case till Monday as the public prosecutor requested time to study the report. The seven-member KEM panel, in their report, have supported the woman’s case for abortion.

The woman, a resident of Dombivali, is carrying a feotus suffering from anencephaly, a condition in which the brain and skull remains undeveloped. Presently, the law allows termination of pregnancies till the 20th week. A draft amendment of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bill is yet to be passed.
