In her statement to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), prime accused Indrani Mukerjea’s secretary Kajal Sharma has listed several prime properties owned by the Mukerjeas in India and abroad. Sharma’s statement is part of the CBI’s charge sheet in the Sheena Bora murder case.

Of these, three properties are in Mumbai, two in Goa, three are in the U.K. and one is in Spain. In Mumbai, the Mukerjeas owned three properties — a flat on the fifth floor of Marlow building where they resided, another in the same building that served as Peter’s office. This flat, Sharma’s statement claims, has been gifted to Vidhie, daughter of Indrani and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna. The latter is a co-accused in the case. They also owned office premises in Phoenix Tower, Lower Parel, but Sharma said though its value was not known to her, this commercial property fetched them rent of Rs.4.4 lakh per month. This sum is credited to Indrani’s SBI account via auto transaction, Sharma said in her statement.

The couple co-owned two flats — each worth Rs 62 lakh and used as residences by Peter — in Gurdwara area of Betim, Goa. They also jointly owned office premises in Shushant Tower-II in Gurgaon, Haryana, which they sold for Rs 42 lakh. Kajal’s statement does not list the flat in Delhi’s South Extension, which the CBI charge sheet claims was willed to Sheena.

Properties abroad

Both Peter and Indrani were British citizens, and owned a property in Snake Park, U.K., details of which Sharma said she was not aware of. However, the CBI has included details of two properties in Bristol and one in London from which the Mukerjeas earned Rs 20 lakh in rent for the financial year ending March 2013. These properties are located at 39, Balmoral House at Canons Way and 9, Percival Court at Clifton in Bristol, and the London flat is in Meridian House.

The couple also own a property in Spain, the details of which Sharma has not given in her statement. Spain is where the family often vacationed. Indrani owned two cars — a Honda Amaze and a Mercedes Benz — purchased in 2013 and 2014 respectively for Rs. 8.5 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh.

Peter and Indrani had three joint accounts in HDFC Bank and one NRE (non-resident external account for NRIs) with Syndicate Bank’s Worli branch. In two other accounts at Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra, Indrani is the account holder and Peter the authorised signatory. Indrani held two accounts with the SBI, and there are two accounts in Vidhie’s name at Syndicate and Axis banks.

The CBI has included details of Sheena’s account containing Rs 97,763 and shown to be dormant as on April 24, 2014. In their arguments in court, the CBI has stressed on the crime’s financial angle, alleging Indrani is suspected to have opened an account in Sheena’s name with HSBC, Singapore through Gayatri Ahuja, a friend employed with DBS Bank, Singapore.

This account was allegedly used to park misappropriated funds, the investigating agency has alleged.
