The police on Tuesday arrested a man in connection with the rape and murder of a 25-year-old girl in Vile Parle on December 6.

The victim was found dead on the first floor of her house at around 3:30 a.m. after neighbours saw smoke coming out of her window and raised an alarm.

She was lying naked on the floor beside a pile of books, which had been set on fire, and her jeans was wrapped around her throat. The post-mortem report confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted and then strangled to death. The police said the suspect was a resident of the same area and was seen peeping into her room a little after midnight on the day of the murder.

“The victim used to stay alone on the first floor, which has an external access, and it is possible to enter it without alerting her parents, who stayed on the ground floor. A CCTV in the area captured the suspect peeping into her window. An inquiry revealed that this man was reported missing,” said a police officer.
