Government employees put off 3-day strike

January 18, 2017 12:38 am | Updated 12:38 am IST - Mumbai:

The three-day strike by the Maharashtra State Government Employees Confederation to press for implementation of the 7th Pay Commission has been put off after the government set up a wage revision committee under former bureaucrat K.P. Bakshi.

A statement issued by the Confederation said Chief Secretary Swadheen Kshatriya invited the representatives for talks on Monday and discussed the demands. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also held talks with the representatives and decided to set up the committee headed by Mr. Bakshi.

“The government said it was committed to implement the 7th Pay Commission and the pending demands would be addressed after the election code of conduct in the State ends,” the statement said.

For the last two years, government employees had raised various demands which were not implemented despite assurances. The government also fell silent on the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission. This resulted in growing unrest among semi-government staff, the teaching and non- teaching fraternity, and zilla parishad employees.

About 19 lakh employees had threatened to go on on a strike for three days from January 18 but following the assurance from the government, the strike has been been postponed. — PTI
