A 26-year-old woman gave birth on a foot overbridge (FOB) at the Nallasopara railway station on Sunday.

Reshma Hakim Ahmed was on her way to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali for a check-up when she went into labour on the FOB, at 9.05 a.m., railway officials said. Ms. Ahmed’s brother Naseem Ahmed, who was accompanying her, said that as soon as he realised she was going into labour, he called out for help. Passersby alerted the authorities.

“Station Superintendent R.K. Meena was informed about the incident by some passengers. She rushed to the spot along with a doctor and two nurses, and aided Ms. Ahmed in delivering the child safely,” a Western Railway official said.

Railway officials subsequently arranged for an ambulance, and took Ms. Ahmed and her newborn son to the Nallasopara Municipal Hospital.

“We called the ambulance immediately and it reached around 9.15 a.m. We have taken an update from the hospital and mother and son are in good health,” police inspector Rishikant Rai, Railway Protection Force, Nallasopara unit, said.

“The station staff were very prompt and called 108 immediately for doctors’ and nurses’ aid. The RPF and the medical staff helped us immensely and we are truly thankful," Mr. Ahmed said.
